Five Books For The Slow Summer Afternoons

There's a specific kind of afternoon this list is for — the kind where the light gets long and a little gold, you've got somewhere to be in an hour but not right now, and the only decision left is which book gets to come with you. These are the five currently living in my bag, my car, and the stack by the bed. A mix of sun-drenched and strange, easy and a little haunted — which feels about right for summer.

The Girls — Emma Cline

If you want a book that feels like California heat — dry grass, cults on the edge of town, the specific ache of being fourteen and wanting to be seen by anyone — this is it. Cline writes the kind of sentences you stop and reread. Not a light read, but a gorgeous one.

Malibu Rising — Taylor Jenkins Reid

This one's the actual beach read of the group — one enormous end-of-summer party, one famous surfing family, and about a decade of secrets that all come out before sunrise. If you've ever wanted a book that feels like a party you weren't invited to but got to watch anyway, start here.

Escape! — Stephen Fishbach

This one's the slow burn of the group — a reality show setup that starts feeling less like entertainment and more like something you shouldn't be watching. If you like a thriller that takes its time getting under your skin instead of announcing itself in chapter one, save this for last.

Circe — Madeline Miller

Greek myth retold from the witch on the island nobody asked about — turns out she's the most interesting person in the whole story. Slow-burning, a little lonely, deeply about becoming someone on your own terms. This is the one I'd bring if I could only bring one.

Vita Nostra — Marina & Sergey Dyachenko

The strangest book on this list, in the best way — a girl gets pulled into a school that isn't quite explaining what it's actually teaching her, and the answer, when it comes, is stranger than anything you'll guess. Not a beach read. More of a "curtains closed, one lamp on" read. Save it for a night you want to feel a little unsettled.
